breakout_stop validation (E12)

One strategy passed the initial gate. This page re-tests it with stricter standards: whether any future information has leaked, whether the results hold after costs are raised, whether the parameters were chosen too cleverly, and whether the numbers still make sense after correction because we have already tried many combinations.

1. Look-ahead test (prefix)

Signals are recomputed on data truncated at 40 random points. If the signal on truncated data differs from the full-data signal, it means future information has leaked.

2. Cost sensitivity

Cost per transactionSharpe ReturnCAGRMax DD
0 bps1.02311.4%26.4%-35.1%
5 bps1.00298.9%25.8%-35.6%
10 bps0.99286.7%25.2%-36.2%
15 bps0.97275.0%24.5%-36.7%
25 bps0.93252.5%23.2%-37.8%
40 bps0.87221.2%21.4%-39.3%

The 15 bps cost is the baseline assumption (10 fee + 5 slippage). If Sharpe collapses at 25 bps, this strategy is fragile to real execution conditions.

3. All parameters, not just the winner

ParameterSharpeReturn CAGRMax DDExposure

{"entry": 100, "k": 2.0}0.122.7%0.4%-34.1%13%

If only one value is good and the rest are bad, that is a sign of overfit. A clean spread across several values is more convincing.

4. Last 12-month holdout test

Parameters frozen from data before 2025-10-01{"entry": 55, "k": 3.0}
Test period388 days
Strategy return7.6%
BTC return over the same period-32.4%
Strategy vs BTC Sharpe0.54 vs -0.62
Strategy drawdown-9.8%

Parameters are chosen only from data before the cutoff date, so the numbers here have never been used to choose anything. This is the test closest to real conditions.

5. Data frequency (weekly bars)

Weekly Sharpe0.02
Return-12.3%
Drawdown-36.2%
Number of bars315

If the effect only appears on daily bars but disappears on weekly bars, it is most likely micro noise, not an economic edge.

6. Universe dependence

UniverseSharpeReturn Max DD
BTC, ETH0.80169.0%-35.2%
BTC, ETH, SOL0.97275.0%-36.7%

The universe uses coins that still exist today. Dead coins have no data on the exchange, so the results contain survivorship bias and must be read as an upper bound, not a number that can be expected.

7. Null test with two block lengths

BlockOriginal Sharpe Null medianp-value
10 days0.97 0.440.049
30 days0.97 0.560.062

Two block lengths are used to ensure the conclusion does not depend on one choice of test parameter. A p below 0.05 means it is hard to explain by random data.

8. Deflated Sharpe Ratio

Daily Sharpe0.0506
Sharpe expected from luck (SR0)0.0977
DSR (probability of genuine edge)0.012
Return skew / kurtosis1.23 / 20.97

DSR corrects Sharpe because we have tested dozens of parameter combinations. A value below 0.95 means the claim of edge is not strong enough to be considered certain.

Conclusion

Look-ahead: clean. At 15 bps cost, Sharpe 0.97 and CAGR 24.5%. At 25 bps cost, Sharpe 0.93. 12-month holdout: strategy +7.6% vs BTC -32.4%. Null test significant on 1 of 2 block lengths. DSR 0.01 (needs >= 0.95 for a strong claim). Conclusion: the evidence is not yet sufficient to consider this a lasting edge.
